HP Acquires Humane’s Assets for $116 Million, Ends AI Pin Sales, and Focuses on AI Integration
HP has officially acquired key assets from Humane in a $116 million deal, signaling the end of the AI Pin project. The AI wearable, developed by ex-Apple veterans Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, struggled to gain traction due to hardware issues and waning consumer interest. With the acquisition, HP gains access to Humane’s intellectual property, including its proprietary CosmOS operating system, while AI Pin sales and services will be discontinued. The deal aligns with HP’s broader strategy to enhance AI integration across its product ecosystem.
End of AI Pin Sales and Refund Process for Customers
Humane decided to end all AI Pin sales immediately while providing current users a single chance to fetch their data but maintained that the devices would lose core functions, including naming, calling, and messaging, from February 28, 2025. AI Pin users will encounter complete feature deprivation, including phone calls, messaging, and AI capabilities, starting from February 28, 2025. The AI Pin buying period must fall within the last 90 days to qualify for a refund, while request deadlines happen on February 27, 2025. The product shutdown of the wearable has been announced as battery problems and declining customer interest forced the company to stop its production.
The discontinuation of the AI Pin will not affect HP’s acquisition of human assets, which will continue to impact the technological landscape. HP owns thousands of patents and applications, and Humane developed the operating system CosmOS. HP will combine these purchased assets into its ongoing plans to implement AI across its product range since they function independently from the discontinued AI Pin hardware.
HP’s Vision for AI Integration in Its Product Line
The acquisition also appointed Humane’s founding fathers as leaders of a new division at HP: HP IQ. In this division, HP will apply AI technology to all its products, from personal computers and printers to conference room systems. By leveraging Humane’s innovative work with AI orchestration in the cloud and local computing environments, HP intends to use Humane’s technology to bring the desired results.
Humane’s Patents and Future AI Impact
However, HP’s acquisition ensures that Humane’s intellectual property will not go to waste after the end of the AI Pin. In addition to HP’s AI expertise, which includes its unique operating system, Cespedes said the company will help enhance HP’s placement in the emerging AI area. The work of Humane is set to have a huge influence on future personal and professional technology as HP relentlessly continues to push the envelope with developments in AI technology and introduces that technology into its products. HP’s acquisition may be a step forward in developing AI-enabled devices and solutions.
